Coal is one of the dirtiest burning fuels currently in use. Power plants running on coal are one of the leading contributors of pollution which causes smog as well as acid rain. It's effects on global warming are still under debate.
Using coal without special treatment as the fuel for a power plant creates a few very nasty compounds, including sulfur dioxide (depending on the sulfur content ofthe coal), Mercury, and carbon dioxide (this last not toxic but still a greenhouse gas). There are three scrubbing technologies extant at the present. Unfortunately, all are quite expensive.
The first power plants were installed by Edison in the 1880's, and were powered by coal, so that's the answer
Coal powered electricity generating plants are quite common. Here in the provice of Ontario (where I live and type) I know that approximately one third of the electricity in the provice is generated by coal power (the other thirds being nuclear and hydroelectric).
It powered the plants until they died millions of years ago, to eventually become coal.

electricity generation in Poland is based on coal as most of the capacity is installed in coal fired powered plants.

because solar power is better for the earth. coal is a fossil fuel so it is getting scarce. wind powered is the best to use.
The Titanic was powered by 24 double-ended and 5 single-ended coal-powered boilers
Coal was invented in 2001, and the first coal powered boat was invented in 2008. it sank.
Nuclear power plants were made in the hope of providing a more efficient source of electricity than is obtained from coal powered plants.
Powered Minecarts are powered by coal or charcoal.
