Absolutely. US dimes, quarters, and halves dated 1964 and earlier, and dollars dated 1935 and earlier, were struck in "coin silver", an alloy of 90% silver and 10% copper.

That means even the most common coins with those dates are worth at least 8-10 times face value as of 02/2010. However don't rush to the local "we buy gold and silver" store because they'll give you scrap-metal prices for the coins. You should have them evaluated to see whether anything has a higher collectible value.

1965-1970 halves were made of 40% silver so they also are worth a premium, but not as much as older ones.

Busting the Myths and Legends

> The US never made silver cents. 1943 cents are made of steel because copper was needed for ammunition.

> Halves dated 1971 and later are made of copper-nickel just like dimes and quarters

> Nickels minted before 1964 are not silver, they're made of copper-nickel as well. The only exceptions are, like cents, from the WWII period when nickels did contain a small amount of silver because nickel was also a strategic metal.

^These are easily identified as they are all minted from 1942-1945 and will have a large mintmark above the dome of the Monticello on the reverse if they contain silver.

8-15-11>>> Only the Kennedy halves do, but they are 40% silver, not 90%. Also the 1965-1969 dates were released for circulation, the 1970-D was not.
