- Courses were taken at a college or university without the appropriate accreditation.
- Course was not passed with the appropriate grade.
- Course was not equivalent to the receiving institution's credit and/or course content requirements.
- Course does not fit into a student's declared major.
- Course that may be antiquated and no longer useful in course content (example, computers)
- Course exceeds the transfer credit limit (not typically the case).

There are colleges and universities that do have a cut-off for some courses, usually laboratory sciences where they are required by health related programs, or where information related to the course you completed is totally antiquated (such as a computer course taken in 1976). For example, some institutions may have a seven or ten year cut-off for anatomy and physiology. Other than that, credits are typically good forever.
