I am 15 years old and I wear braces so I know what I am talking about, even though my teeth didn't have this problem. To put it simply overgrown gums interfere with orthodontic treatment. This requires them to be removed or cut away from the gum line. I hope I have helped you on this matter.

∙ 13y agoFor the most part, no. I am 14 and when i got my braces on, I didn't have to get my gums cut. For the most part, not a large number of younger kids have to get their gums cut. The orthodontist only cuts the gums when they are overgrown and could interfere when they put on the brackets. For adults getting braces the chance is more likely, but still not a regular thing. Once you get on your braces they don't hurt a bit :). good luck, you will have a perfect smile in no time!

Some people say that gum helps move your teeth faster when you have braces. But I have also heard that it stalls the movement. So Is the dentist just telling you not to chew gum because it will stick?
You do not chew gum while wearing braces because it will stick in the wirework. Listen to the orthodontist, not "people". I am just adding on to this answer: I have braces and i chew freedent. In my opinion freedent does not taste very good ( and looses its flavor in less than a minute ). But, I have also chewed many different types of gum with braces and it is usually fine if u chew it in the back of your mouth.
