There's a distinct difference between fighting and playing. Some dogs DO growl while playing but there is a distinct difference between playing and fighting. A playful growl is low but a fight growl is about as low as they can get there voice to go. If your dogs start lunging, biting at vital points of the neck/stomach, and growl deeply then you should carefully separate them. The dog being attacked usually bites back viciously, or whimpers and shows defeat.
