Do finches stay in the Utah area over winter if there is food or should they leave regardless?

A finch's migration patterns depend on the species, but also depend on climatic and food conditions. If food is available and the climate favors a bird that would otherwise migrate farther, they may stay put - why waste the energy and risk migrating when it's easier to stay put? We have a seed feeder on our deck and the finches have been there constantly since yesterday morning. I'm thinking they stick around seeing as how it is Dec. 14.
