A Firefighter's Vow

Firefighting is a calling
Which some of us receive
Your life laid down for others
Is something you believe

When I get a call to respond
To a house engulfed by fire
Saving those trapped inside
Is all that I desire

When Im ready to enter
And conduct a search inside
Let me remember all the places
A person escaping the flames may hide

Give my eyes the clearest of vision
To see through the thickest smoke
Let my hands identify with ease
All the things they touch and poke

Let my hearing become selective
To distinguish every sound
Each murmur, cry or scream
So it's location can be found

May I find every last person
Be it woman, child or man
And get them out to safety
As quickly as I can

If time is ticking by
And things are looking dire
I'll give my life to save yours
So you survive the fire

No, firefighters do not take vows in the same way that members of religious orders or professions like nursing or teaching might. However, firefighters do often uphold a set of values and commitments related to their duty, such as bravery, teamwork, and protecting and serving the community.
