Barely. After a while, maybe about a month, the smell will start and you should clean the cage. They also don't pee that much because they are desert animals and therefore do not need much water. So it doesn't smell at first but eventually it will stink

As far as rodent pets go gerbils are some of the cleanest. Since they are originally from the desert, gerbils have adapted to conserve as much water as possible. Meaning their faeces are very dry and they do not urinate very often. This leads to them being very clean animals and since they usually go to the toilet in one part of their home you can remove this occasionally and you won't have to clean their whole cage very often.

Because gerbils are desert animals and they drink only a little water, they don't go to the bathroom a lot. This makes them less smelly than some other rodents
