A goldfish does not have a true stomach. The goldfish are various species in the family Cyprinidae, otherwise known as carp. Carp do not have true stomachs.
Carp digest food in the intestine, which is up to twice the length of its body. Different enzymes are secreted by the pancreas along the intestine. Trypsin and chymotrypsin are used to break down protein. These two enzymes do not require an environment which is strongly acidic. There is no part in the carp's intestine that is strongly acidic.
A real stomach is an enlargement of the digestive tract which secretes protein-digesting enzymes called proteases and strong acids to aid in food digestion.
A large part of a wild carp's diet is unicellular algae. A stomach isn't necessary to digest unicellular algae. Worms, insect larvae and fresh vegetable matter are only partly digested by the intestine of a carp. An animal with a true stomach would digest this material more completely.
The carp has a minor enlargement of the intestine sometimes referred to as a digestive bulb. This digestive bulb is not a true stomach because it does not contain strong acid. Sometimes, the digestive bulb is mistaken for a true stomach.
Not all animals have a stomach. There are a few vertebrates that don't have a true stomach. The platypus, which is a monotreme mammal, also does not have a true stomach.
