Guinea pigs don't need a top on their cage but SOME because some are climbers or if you have a cat you might want to consider a top. You don't NEED a top unless you want one! ^^

I suggest using food. Pigs all love food. You can use Carrots, Broccoli, Carrot tops, Lettuce, Spinach, etc. Guinea Pigs also need VITAMIN C, so it is best to give them vitamin C things. If your pig doesn't like food, use treats. They make special treats for Guinea Pigs. You want to bribe your Guinea Pig.. Without using food, they probably won't pay any attention to you... Here's a tip for training: When you are teaching your pig a trick, make sure to say a word. For example, if you are teaching your pig to circle, make sure to say circle a lot to get them used to the word. Hope this all helps :)

while you can keep them out for a loooong time as long as they have food and water. but beware lol if you are holding them then they will pee on you usually if held for more then a half hour tops (at least my guinea pig lol). i almost always hold her with a towel because of this reason. without food or water i would say that you shouldn't keep them out for more then a couple hours (and yes if they are grazing grass counts as food and you can keep them out for at least up to 3 hours in this case). I'm not an expert so i would be careful. and remember if it is hot you should not leave your guinea pig outside unless it has a cool shaded place to go if it wants to and you should still not leave it out for more then half hour i would say if it is hot.
