Best Answer

because they need to eat
It's just in their nature. There's nothing you can do to prevent it or stop it from happening--guppies have, are, and will always eat try to eat their babies. The only reason I can provide is that natural instincts about eating their fry are instilled into their minds by the force of nature.

Yes, they certainly do eat their fry, as do platies, swordfish, and mollies.
Rather than separating them (which can be stressful to the fish), simply make sure that you provide many hiding spots for the fry such as plants.

Yes. They will, which is why you should immediately move the mother away from the babies. (If you were using a breeding net, just take her out of the net) If you feed them well, but not overfeeding, they might not, but they usually do. So be careful if you let your fry (babies) roam the tank freely with the adults.
Yes, guppies, as well as other tropical fish, are known to eat their young. Both the males and the females will eat the young. It is highly recommended that you put a female guppy in a fish breeder before she gives birth to prevent such cannibalism from either parent. If the parents cannot be separated immediately after the young are born, the next best option is to provide plenty of plants for the young to hide in.

Why do female guppies reproduce?

Guppies are the one of the easiest pet fish to breed in captivity. They do it all themselves, the only thing you may have to do is take the babies out and put them in a different container because the parents may eat them. I found that none of my guppies seem to eat the babies.
