Hair is one of these, because it takes several years to grow to significant length, and thus indicates that the person whose head it's growing from has been fairly healthy during that time -- and hence, more likely to be able to survive nine months of pregnancy and childbirth. (Related topic: while individual men may prefer blondes, or brunettes, or redheads, in general, any more vibrant colour in the hair sends a similar message.) But dull, limp hair that's falling out in clumps is the feminine equivalent of a combover.
