It depends on the hamster. A hamster that has been abused, neglected or had little human contact will always put you at risk of being bitten.

It is always best to obtain a hamster from a young age. When choosing the hamster, look for the one that is most inquisitive. Curious hamsters are better at accepting new situations and people.

From then on, it is a question of being patient and handling it just for a few minutes every day for the first month or so after which you can begin taking it out for longer.

Always be careful to be gentle and not make any loud or sudden noises or movements that may scare them.

Never keep the hamster out for longer than it likes and never disturb it whilst sleeping.

Giving little treats now and again also helps since most animals respond well to food incentives.

My partner and I chose, bought and brought up our hamster Smudge this way and we have never been bitten by him. He is almost 2 now and loves spending time getting stroked and having a daily almond. ^^

To be honest they don't particually like it. They tend to wriggle. Its best if you hold them loosly to give them freedom to move. They do like to come out of the cage for some excersise however, and this is very important. You could put it in a hamster ball for a run.

It depends if your hamster likes you. If you hold it and its afraid of you, it will nip your hands and vice versa.

Not normally but if you pick them up from above they think you are a predator. Its best to just let them crawl onto your hand.

Chinese dwarf hamsters. They're easily tamed, and very good hamsters. They don't poop as often either. They'll just sleep in your hood if you let them.
