Glass cages are better at keeping in humidity and maintaining a proper environment for the crabs basic needs. Wire cages are not recommended.

No but it needs to be big enough (ten gallons for every 2-3 small hermies) And you have to keep in mind if a heater will melt the plastic.

That depends on what you mean by "sleep." Hermit crabs are nocturnal, which means they usually come out at night. The reason they are nocturnal in their native habitat is because it is too hot for them to come out during the day, though you will see them out and about on overcast days. When hermit crabs are kept in captivity and their conditions are perfect, they will occasionally cease being strictly nocturnal and will roam their cages during the daytime. A hermit crab that stays in its shell, and does not move all winter is probably dead. Winter is a hard time for most hermit crabs, because most hermit crab owners do not understand that hermit crabs must be kept in humid conditions, at temperatures above 75 degrees. When the temperature gets below 65 they start to slow down and will eventually die if they stay cold for too long. If their cage is not humid enough, they will suffocate to death because they require humid air to breathe properly. As a side note, the plastic boxes most places sell as hermit crab cages are TERRIBLE for hermit crabs. A person interested in owning and caring for hermit crabs should be ready to spend at least $50 (preferably more!) on a good home for them, a glass aquarium with a snug-fitting glass lid to hold in humidity, and a reliable heat source.

at the Colorado mills mall there is a place called hermit hut thqat is a good place. petco and petsmart are also good. i got 1 of my crabs at petsmart and the other 2 from earthbound trading company, that place is not a good place to get a hermit crab, it isn't even a pet it is a jewelery store that sells crabs. but petsmart is the best.

Hermit crabs are rather crafty little climbers. In the wild they spend part of their time in trees. They have pointy little leg tips that can easily poke into the silicone on the corner of a fish tank and can climb all the way to the top and out. This is why it is a good idea to have a metal mesh top with a glass cover to help hold in humidity, and to help hold in your crabs! Don't assume they can't climb out. Mine regularly climb up the air hose that goes to their bubbler pond, and also the cord that leads to the thermostat sensor that controls the UTH temperature. hermit crabs should never be kept in a wire cage, as they are sensitive to metals and unless you live in a humid, tropical climate, their gills will dry out and they will slowly suffocate. they need 70-80% humidity.
