According to the 2011 Journal published by the IOCS (Institute Of Crustacean Studies), hermit crabs sometimes do crawl into bigger shells when they get too big for their current one. In an isolated incident that occurred Jamaica, a 21 year old Caucasian man on holiday at the beach on the eastern border, was admitted to the nearest A&E ward, complaining of constipation and stomach cramps. X-Ray results revealed that he in fact had a hermit crab lodged between his anal canal. The crab in question was 7 inches in diameter. It was later revealed after extraction that the hermit crab had been living there for a period of 72 hours. It was still alive.

Do hermit crabs need a shell?

Yes! It is very important that a hermit crab has a shell, it is used to protect their bodies. It also saves them from getting eaten by other animals! Though sometimes, you find hermit crabs that haven't found a shell that isn't the right size or shape, and instead of a shell, they might carry things like bottle tops. Usually, hermit crabs try to avoid situations like this but, when they urgently need to change into another shell because their current shell is too small, it will be unavoidable.
