The hippopotamus lives in and around water. They have adapted to a watery existence. They will come out at night to graze on grasses, returning to spend most of the hot day in cooling water. A hippo can even suffer from sunburn if out of the water too long. They are also very territorial, with the bull hippo always ready to drive off interloping males.
