Unfinished endings are used to signal or to leave an opening for a sequal. This is usually in movies that are expected to bring in big bucks at the box office. If the movie pulls in enough profits, then a sequal will normally be created to continue through the unfinished ending. If it doesn't make enough, then it'll just be unfinished.
