Initially he can. Manure that comes after the twist will be eliminated like there is nothing wrong. But the manure that is before the twist has no way out. This is what causes the problem. If not remedied by emergency surgery the horse will most likely die within a matter of a day or two.

Yes, if surgery isn't done soon enought. I wish the answer was no, but this is very serious. It is like a person with a ruptured appendix. It has to be diagnosed before it can be fixed. Most local vets do not have the facilities for equine abdominal surgery and the horse must be trailered to a university vet school or a place that can deal with this problem. This all takes time and the horse could die before he makes it to the operating table. Even when the horse gets the medical help he needs the odds are not great that he will recover. Horses as a general rule do not do well under general anesthesia Some do make it which makes it worthwhile depending on the economic and emotional value of the horse. Many horses that survive the surgery can not return to a normal riding routine.
