Human emotions have a certain amount of adaptive value, although they can also be detrimental in some circumstances. Broadly speaking, we have evolved to survive and reproduce, and love is an emotion that encourages us to do those things. Hate may help us to eliminate threats to our survival. Fear may help us to escape from danger (although it can also paralyse us rather than helping us to escape - even that can be adaptive, since there are some types of danger for which the most successful strategy is to remain motionless and play dead). Depression does not seem to be very adaptive; that may be an emotion that arises when we no longer can see a way to adapt. People do not always feel the most appropriate emotions in every situation. We may hate someone whom we ought to love, and so forth. But even so, emotion is in general adaptive. It helps us to make the choices that we need to make in order to live our lives. In the absence of emotion, we would fall prey to apathy.
