I think most Jews identify as white when the issue is forced, but arenn't comfortable identifying as white. Jews generally were not recognized as white in the strange system of Racial classification used in America. Instead, it was quite common for Jews and non Jew to refer to the Jewish race. This usage was near universal in the 19th century and common up until World War II. When racial categories were enshrined in law and had strong legal consequences, for example, in the US south or in places where there were real-estate covenants excluding non-whites and not explicitly excluding people "of the Hebrew Race or Persuasion," Jews let themselves be counted as white. (Those covenenats, bu the way, only lost their force in the 1950s. I have spoken with Jews who were turned away by such covenants here in Iowa in the 1950s.) To this day, Jews feel uncomfortable when people divide the world into black and white, because we are intensely aware both of our minority status and of the fact that for many purposes we pass as white and therefore benefit from white privilege.

Legal discrimination against Jews in the United States only really ended with the passage of the Civil Rights act of 1964. There were universities with anti-Jewish admissions quotas, real-estate covenants that forbade selling or renting to Jews, and employers who refused to hire Jews. To this day, there are racists in the far right who consider Jews to be non-white and act on their convictions by doing things like shooting up synagogues.
