Will a secondary executor of an estate after a death lose control even if the will states joint executors?

Any executor must be appointed by the probate court. If joint executors are named in the Will they must petition to be appointed by the court. They can only be removed by the same court.

What does codicil mean?

A codicil is another document that amends a will in some fashion. The amendment could be a simple as changing executors or more extensive like adding or dropping beneficiaries. I must be signed in the same way a will is signed. It doe not need to be witnessed by the same witnesses who witnessed the main will. Codicils are not very common any longer now that computer programs can reprint the main will in seconds. When wills were done on typewriters and the typing had to be perfect, a codicil was used to amend complicated wills.

Can you have two executors?

Yes. You may name co-executors in your will. However, if you do so you should make certain that the two get along well and that your instructions in the will are very clear. You might consider naming an arbitrator, your attorney perhaps, if the two have a disagreement they cannot resolve.
