Not really. The bigger companies keep an eye on the small "indies" and, if they are successful, the bigger studios will try to buy out the smaller ones, or raid their talent.

What does the name indie mean?

A song is indie if it is on a independent label. In actuality this is more complicated than it seems because some indie bands join major labels but are still respected by the indie culture. For example, the band Sonic Youth have been on a major label since the 90's but many people still respect them and call them indie. Indie may also refer to a specific style of music. In that respect indie is an umbrella term meaning that it encompases many sub genres and styles. Usually, trends birth these sub genres and styles. So when someone calls a song indie they may refer to a certain trend in music as well as whether the artist is on a major label or not.

My dream was to work in movies with a recent layoff I am unemployed and in my forties It's now or never and I choose now and I am looking for suggestions to get into filmmaking?

You could try Shooting People. At https://shootingpeople.org/home#make This is a site where you can can hire and apply for jobs in Indie filmmakers films. You can also collaborate with other filmmakers. Or you could write a script rent a camera and ask friends and family to help you make your film. then you could post it on youtube and enter it into a film competition. Like Film fights At http://www.filmfights.com/ there is no prize (or price) so if you want to make a living off of it I would suggest entering it into a different competition as well There are also a lot of books on the subject I suggest "Pulling off your shorts" by: Troy Lanier. It is geared towards Teens but it is a great book. Sorry for the long answer but I hope it helped.
