I'm not really sure what you're asking. The artist's name will be listed when the book is printed. They just call them artists, as in "Artist: John Doe."

English artist and painter of horses and rural scenes?

John Constable was a pretty famous English artist who painted many rural landscapes, but I'm not so sure about the horses... Gainsborough was also a well known English artist who painted some landscapes, but most of his paintings are portraits... Stubbs was good at painting horses, but that's all he was really good at... really, there were not many English artists who stood out among the other European artists when it comes to both horses and landscapes.

How do you know if you are going to a trusted tattoo artist?

In almost all instances, you should be shopping around and finding an artist that you respect and whose work you really like. If this is not the case, then you should look through the portfolios of the artists in your local shop to see what they are capable of. Some shops showcase awards and trophies in their waiting room area, but this is not always the case. Sometimes the artist will have their awards and such in their office, but once again, this is not always the case. Some artists just don't do the convention circuit.

There seems to be this misconception that self-taught artists are inferior just because they haven't learned their craft the conventional way. If this artist is just as competent should it matter?

Of course not, provided the competence is really the same.

Who are the top ten English artists from the 1500s?

Here are only a few English artists, as there really weren't any prominent artists in England at that time. George Gower Nicholas Hillard Marcus Gheeraerts the Elder Isaac Oliver Rowland Lockey Hans Holbein the Younger -Holbein was really the most well known English artist of the 16th century, even though he was German and just moved to England. Please note that these are the painting/scuplting artists of the time... Obviously, Shakespeare would be on this list if I were to include playwrights and authors. I recommend just making a list of 1600 artists in England, or the top European artists of the 1500's.
