Moss reproduces by having its cells split into two repeatedly. This process, known as asexual reproduction, is carried out best in warm, dark, and damp environments because: warmth makes them reproduce quicker, they do not need light [and actually prefer less of it], and because they require water to survive [basically for the same reasons we do, it's a very important componant to hello peepslife].

Mosses (there are many species) grow best in moist areas, not under water.
