Grocery, like all other retail, is concerned primarily with the business bottom line. That means the store is motivated to pay you as little as possible to stay consistant with the profit margin. Most scut and entry level work is paid at or near mimium wage. As you pick up responsibilty or demostrate skill, the store will most likely increase wages. Some ways to start off at a higher wage is to work the overnight restock crew, odd shifts, Sundays, ect...Other ways to increase above miminum wage is to have a skill like accounting or butchering. All that being said, stores need dependable and reliable people and, as soon as you demonstrate that, they will pay more to keep you.
