No, most women are not so irresponsible.

Nothing but human waste and toilet paper should be flushed down a toilet, there are bins for a reason and toilets should not be used to put general waste such as tampons and applicators. Applicators could add to pipe blockages and bypass sewage treatment so wash into the oceans.

Tampons are a big environmental concern, adding 12,000+ plastic applicators to the environment, specifically allowing them to get into the environment such as via the ocean where they can harm wild life, is incredibly irresponsible and unethical. If you're going to use applicators throw them in the bin.

Why are there so many tampon applicators on the ground... Do girls just hang onto them and discard them at random... Why not throw them away in the bathroom... Is it just my location?

Some people are just irresponsible when it comes to dealing with waste. There's really no reason to use applicators, their sole purpose is to limitgenital contact, all they really do is add tothe environmental impact of using disposable menstrual products - especially if they're plastic. You've got to think that women who use commercial tampons with plastic applicators really don't care much for the environment so may well just disgard them wherever. Some women also flush both tampons and applicators, they can then make it through sewage treatment plants into waterways - depending on where you are rivers or drain systems may flush these applicators into certain areas where you are seeing them. It may also be that your local garbage of sanitary bin collectors are bad at their jobs so drop waste on the ground.

What is the difference between an applicator tampon and a non-applicator tampon?

Simply: applicator tampons have an applicator, non-applicator tampons don't.Applicators were originally included with tampons because the Catholic church was concerned about women touching their own genitals, they continue to be popular in the US because of attitudes Americans have towards female anatomy. Non-applicator are a better option as they're simpler, more hands-on, and give better control so they're easier to insert - also it means less waste. With the average woman using around 12,000-16,000 tampons in her lifetime, adding that amount of plastic to landfill too represents a significant environmental impact.

Are tampons more comfortable with aplicators?

No, the sole purpose of applicators is to limit genital contact.Applicators were introduced because the Catholic Church was concerned about women touching their own genitals, because it was too similar to masturbation and they weren't sure whether they thought this was acceptable. Applicators are largely only used in America, where there are a lot of hang-ups about touching genitals, most women use non-applicator tampons.Non-applicator tampons are normally smoother with rounder tips, as they are more hands-on they allow greater control during insertion to insert easier and correctly first time. Applicators really just add to waste, and it's common when using applicators that the tampon isn't inserted far enough.

Do you take out the tampon applicator when you use a tampon?

You first put your thumb and middle finger on the applicator and insert the tampon. Make sure the tampon goes all the way in and only the string is hanging out. Then remove the applicator and throw it away.

Caused by Staphylococcus aureus what condition became prominent in the 1970s when tampon-using women were getting it?

The condition prominent in the 1970's in tampon using women was Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS).Certain tampon brands started using super-absorbent materials that were not safety tested, these materials caused vaginal tears which resulted in vaginal hemorrhaging and higher risk of TSS as it gave bacterial toxins from bacteria like Staphylococcus Aureus direct access to the bloodstream. Tampon companies not only continued to sell these tampons but also heavily promoted these new tampons to get more women using them. At the time nothing was known about TSS or tampon risks so women were also using these tampons for far longer than they should have, thus allowing larger numbers of bacteria to multiply which also increased the risk of them contracting TSS.
