Before receiving their degree, and becoming Registered Nurses pay would not be applicable, they are after all students. An RN in a trainee status, perhaps for some form of specialty would certainly be entitled to remuneration.

The 2011 Occupational Outlook Handbook provided by theUS Dept. of Labor'sBureau of Labor Statistics lists three different types of nurses: registered nurses, licensed practicsal/vocational nurses, and nursing aides/orderlies/attendants. None of them need for additional on-the-job training; however, the amount of pre-employment education and training varies for each type of nurse. The handbook states,

Nursing aides and attendants typically need a postsecondary certificate. Orderlies generally have at least a high schooldiploma. Nursing aides must pass their state’s competency exam.Licensed vocational nurses must complete an accredited program, which takes about 1 year. After getting a certificate, prospective LPNs or LVNs can take the National Council Licensure Examination, or NCLEX-PN.Registered nurses usually take one of three education paths: a bachelor's of science degree in nursing (BSN), an associate’s degree in nursing (ADN), or a diploma from an approved nursing program. Registered nurses must also be licensed.

The Occupational Outlook Handbook has a lot more detailed information, and I believe it will have the answer you're looking for. I've included a link to it below.

A two year nursing program - for an LPN degree, at a local community college is quite a bit less than half as expensive as a four year nursing program - for an RN degree.
