Rarely. But I remember the oil pumps on Ford small V8's from the 60's and 70's seize up and twist the oil pump drive shaft in half. When that happened it was sudden.
None, oil pumps are not prone to wear out or fail. If the oil pump is actually failing the whole engine is probably worn.
Water pumps in cars usually fail because the main bearing wears out. Well water pumps usually fail because the impeller wears out.

Oil pumps rarely fail----the problem of low oil pressure readings almost always turns out to be the sending unit (usually mounted very close to the oil filter) when oil pressure is truly a problem the tell tail sign will be a lot of lifter type ticking noises----that is a sign to shut off the engine as fast as possible
