Do people differ on their definition of god?

Absolutely. There are many ways people see God. Some see him as a person controlling everything on Earth and others see it as some kind of boundless entity of light that can be controlled like magic. Some see god as a loving god, a neutral god, or an angry god. In fact its very difficult for any to people to have the exact same definition of God because each of us incorporates the experiences they have had in their life with how they see the world including god.
