Not necessarily, my parents were very lenient (actually they encouraged me) to let me go hang out with my friends. I think that the main contributor to ditching class is peers and workload. Meaning, peers because well, if your friends are doing it you would want to do it too. And workload in the sense that if a class is too easy, they think that it would be ok to skip a class or two and there will be no repercussions that will affect their grades. At the same time, if the class if too hard, they lose motivation and ditch so they don't feel stupid in class. I feel the ditching is normal (especially if it's a substitute teacher teaching), but if it becomes habitual, the parent(s) may have to intervene to bring the kid back on course.
