Not always. Sexual intercourse is the most common way to conceive a child, but it is not the only way. Pregnancy occurs when a male sperm fertilizes a female egg. This combines their genetic material and forms an embryo, which grows into a fetus and is later born as a male or female infant. Pregnancy can potentially occur if even a small abount of semen enters the vagina through means other than sexual inercourse, such as masturbation. An infertile couple can have healthy sperm harvested and placed inside the uterus via a needle, which hightens the sperm's chance of reaching an egg. This is called Artificial Insemination. There is also "In Vitro" [In glass] fertilization, where the egg and sperm are both harvested from donors and the egg is fertilized outside of the womb. then the fertilized egg is implanted into the womb.
