If a given plane has four engines, they are all used and needed to carry out a normal flight. It is absolutely uncommon to shut down engines inflight.
On the ground at taxi-in or taxi-out, one or two engines can be shut down to save some fuel.
A four engined aircraft can actually fly on only two engines in some cases (though only if the other engines have failed)

Engines supply energy the an engine shaft(metal cylinder) by making it turn. We used engines for almost everything... Cars, planes, fans.
Yes, jets are planes but jets are mostly known as supersonic planes.
Smaller planes have piston engines, but bigger planes like the Boeing 717-777 and other planes have turbine engines
planes, cars, motorcycle (anything that has internal combustion engines)
Hawkers 800Xp engines are used in aircraft such as planes or hovercrafts. They do not have much use besides the aircraft. One wouldn't be able to use it much for anything else.

You have to have at least one. (If you don't have an engine, your are classified as a glider.) The largest planes typically run 4 or 6 jet engines. Most planes have 1,2,3,4 or 6 engines. Very large aircraft sometimes have more. There are propeller planes, turbo prop and jet engines. There are also VTOL Vertical TakeOff and Landing planes, such as the Harrier and Osprey
they have larger engines, therfore it takes more fuel to provide the massive power that they need.
Planes powered by internal combustion engines came first.
The engines propel the airplanes.
