Some types of plants do well with Bettas and other fish and can mutually benefit both the fish and the plant. Make sure the plants are healthy and free of parasites and are nontoxic for the fish, for the fish will generally nibble on the vegetation. Provide adequate lighting for the type of plant you choose (different plants have different lighting requirements) and also remember some plants may need additional supplements added to the water to stay healthy, such as iron, etc.

What Can kill a betta fish other than a betta fish?

Well, if you love your Betta fish, then it should live by itself. But if you add another Betta to your current Betta fish's tank, then they will start a fight because Betta Fish are Siamese fighting fish and if one Betta is in contact of another Betta, the possible reason would be a fight between them two.

Is there any negative effects placing gold fish with tropical fish?

Most fish get along well. However, do NOT mix betta fish with other fish. Not even another betta. You have to have a permit to have to betta fish in the same tank with eachother. Betta fish are only mixed to mate. Bettas are not born in the egg. They come out as a very small fish. After the betta babies have come out, all of the fish are seperated. Even the parents, if the betta babies are left in the tank with the others the betta parents are very likely to eat the others.

Which plants are best used with betta fish?

You can use nearly any aquatic plant you can think of with a betta. Your selection will be more limited by the lighting you have as opposed to plants that will be compatible with a betta. If you're new to plants in a tank I would recommend java fern and/or java moss. Both will grow well under low light conditions and are very easy to care for.
