They can be found alongside creeks or rivers with a slow rate of running water, as well as in still freshwater ponds, dams, lakes and billabongs - anywhere with a bank high enough in which to dig their burrows.

They are found from the cooler sub-alpine areas in the south, such as Victoria and the Tasmanian highlands, north through New South Wales to tropical far north Queensland. Platypuses live in bushland as well as tropical, sub-tropical and temperate rainforests. Platypuses live in burrows that they dig on the banks of freshwater creeks, rivers, lakes and dams. The female digs a chamber at the end of a long burrow where she shelters her young.

∙ 11y agoNot usually. Platypuses prefer the clear waters of creeks, rivers and lakes. Wetlands do not usually provide them with the right conditions for food or shelter. They need to dig burrows in riverbanks, and wetlands tend to be low areas without distinct riverbanks or suitable areas high enough above the waterline for platypuses to burrow.
