It depends on how popular their sales are in collective anthologies of misc. poets or their own works are. It's like being in music; if your work isn't selling, you aren't earning. And it's hard to get to the point where you're earning much anyway, as the market is competitive.
If you're Shakespeare; you are rich. But you're also pretty much dead.
