The reason that poppies grew so widly in Flander's fields is because when the bodies of all of the dead soldiers from world war I were buried in Flande's field the decomposing bodies became a fertilizer to the soil and made enough nutrients to make poppies, which eventually began to grow all over the Field, making it covered in red.
