It's not true that rabbits with long ears have a longer lifespan than rabbits with short ears. Ear length has no bearing on a rabbit's lifespan.

What do rabbits and hares have in common?

Jackrabbits are actually hares. Hares and rabbits are closely related: they belong to different genera, but they're classified in the same family (Leporidae, of the order Lagomorpha). Hares give birth to their babies above-ground, while rabbits give birth to babies in underground burrows. Baby hares (leverets) are born with fur and they're able to see, while baby rabbits (kits) are born blind and naked. Hares tend to have longer legs, ears, and faces than rabbits do, but there is variation between different species.

How do you distinguish between a jack rabbit and normal rabbit?

Jack Rabbits/Hares do not bear their young below ground in a burrow but rather in a shallow depression or flattened nest of grass called a form. Young hares are adapted to the lack of physical protection offered by a burrow by being born fully furred and with eyes open. They are hence able to fend for themselves very quickly after birth, that is to say they are precocial. By contrast, the related rabbits and cottontail rabbits are altricial, having young that are born blind and hairless. All rabbits (except the cottontail rabbits) live underground in burrows or warrens, while hares (and cottontail rabbits) live in simple nests above the ground, and usually do not live in groups. Jack Rabbits/Hares are generally larger than regular rabbits, with longer ears, and have black markings on their fur. Jack Rabbits have not been domesticated, while rabbits are often kept as house pets. In gardens, they are typically kept in hutches, small, wooden, house-like boxes that protect the rabbits from the environment and predators. The Jack Rabbits diet is very similar to that of the regular rabbit

How are hares and rabbits are different?

Hares are larger than rabbits, and their ears are much longer than those of the rabbit. When you only get a quick glimpse of the animal the long ears are the easiest way to differentiate between a hare and a rabbit. Hares have longer legs than a rabbit and can run much faster than rabbits. When a rabbit runs away from you, you will see its white scut, as the tail is called; the hare does not have a white scut. Rabbits are sociable animals and live in underground colonies called warrens. Hares live solitary lives above ground and sleep (and give birth) in scratched-out depressions called forms. Baby rabbits are called kittens. They are born without fur and their eyes are shut; they are totally dependent upon their mothers. Baby hares are called leverets and are born with fur, their eyes wide open and they are able to fend for themselves within a hour of their birth, with their mother only visiting once or twice a day to feed their baby. Sometimes, depending where in the world they live, a hare's coat will change color from brown to white in winter while a rabbit's coat changes to grey in winter.

What is a fact about rabbits and hares?

Many people believe rabbits and hares are a part of the "rodent" category. In reality, they are more closely related to a horse than a mouse. And their category is called "lagomorphs".

Why is a rabbit a rabbit and not a hare?

First answer: There are two different types of rabbit. The hare is a wild rabbit and has longer legs and ears. This is how it is different to rabbits that we have!Disagreement: The above answer is incorrect. Hares and rabbits are differently animals. Although, hares do usually have longer legs and ears than rabbits.Rabbits exist in the wild and as domestic animals (pets, farm animals, and lab animals). There are many different species of wild rabbit and they live all over the world. Domestic rabbits were all bred from one species: the European Rabbit, which still lives in the wild in some parts of the world. On the other hand, hares are wild only. There are no domesticated hares (except in some individual cases, where someone rescued a wild hare that was in distress and raised it at home).Another difference between hares and rabbits is that hares are born with fur and they can see, whereas rabbits are born blind and naked. Another difference is that rabbits dig burrows underground to live in, whereas hares live above ground (they dig shallow ditches but not underground). The words "hare" and "rabbit" are often used interchangeably, so it can be confusing. For instance, jackrabbits (a wild species) are actually hares. And the Belgian Hare (a domestic breed) is actually a rabbit.
