They take digital photographs of the Earth's surface, in either the infrared, visible,

ultraviolet, or overlapping bands. Then, when requested, they send the data down

to the ground stations, and then it gets passed on to NOAA. On a nice generic

conceptual level, you can think of it exactly the same as when you take a picture

of clouds with your phone and then 4G it up to Fezbook.

That depends on the type of satellite, and there are two major types. Visual satellites show you a view of the weather as you might see it yourself; clouds, rain, etc. Very useful.

The other types are radar satellites, which will tell you how thick the clouds are, and how full of water they are.

No. The Moon causes tides because of its mass, but the mass of an artificial satellite is negligible. So it doesn't cause any kind of influence on the weather, other than allowing us to report on it.
