No they do not need them to survive. Most people add rocks to an aquarium when they are trying to landscape/aquascape and make the tank look more natural. Rock arangements can of course be used by fish as hiding places etc.

∙ 15y agoThere are reports of snails that ingest lichen, which are rock eating "things" (because they are a symbiotic combination of a fungus and a photosynthetic organism). In ingesting the lichen, they also ingest bits of rock. It isn't that the snail is necessarily "eating the rock" so much as that it ends up with a bit of rock "in its mouth" because it is eating the lichen. A few links can be found below.
