Do not confuse socialism with the writings of Marx or Lenin. This is where the Communism we are familiar with originated. Christianity teaches caring for the sick and needy (and much more). People confuse labels all the time, often simply to get a reaction. Do not be surprised if someone calling themselves a Socialist has never looked up the definition.
