Sushi Rolls
Yup.
First, for the purposes of this question, I am narrowing the analysis to Jews who keep kosher, e.g. follow the dietary laws, and also ignoring any personal allergies. While Jews can eat sushi, they can only eat vegetarian sushi or sushi from kosher sea creatures, like tuna, salmon, yellowtail, butterfish, mackerel, spanish mackerel, etc. All non-fish (crabs, shrimp, prawns, etc.) are not kosher and prohibited. Additionally, if there is any meat elsewhere in the meal, the sushi cannot be prepared with any dairy, and must be prepared koshered utensils (utensils that have been properly washed and/or have never had contacted with dairy). Conversely, if the sushi has dairy in it (Philadelphia rolls), meat must be wholly excised from the meal, but fish does not count as meat.
There are some sushi rolls that are made with fried ingredients. 'Crunchy' rolls or tempura rolls have some fried ingredients in them. I have had a roll that was rolled in panko and then deep fried.
The differences between types of rolls are unique to different restaurants. An order of a roll is normally a set of 6-8 small rolls. A sushi hand roll is about the same amount of food as the other rolls, but served in one cone of seaweed that fits easily in someone's hand.
Rice vinegar is absolutely necessary in sushi rolls. Sushi is named for the sticky rice, which is made with a little bit of rice vinegar. Without vinegar this is just regular rice, and it will not stick to itself enough to make a roll.
Rice, Egg Rolls, And Sushi
eating sushi rolls im asian
rice, sushi, dumplings, spring rolls, dimsims.
Dynamite and California rolls are a Western type of Sushi. The dynamite rolls are especially good because they are made with tempura.
If you dislike fish stay away from the sashimi as it is nothing but pure fish...no rice, nothing. For sushi i would recommend "California rolls" (crab and mayo), "vegeterian rolls" (cukes and advocados usually) and some places will have sushi with steak rolled inside (obviously not traditional). And you can never go wrong with "dynamite rolls"! Enjoy!
