Both. Currently there are 900 species known some of which live and hunt in trees, while others prefer the ground. All of them can produce a silk which can provide either a tubular tent in trees, or on the ground can be used to line holes in which they reside. This is done to either stabilize the home or making it easier to crawl for the Spiders.
