The Central Pacific RR was only around as an independent company until 1885, when its assets were leased by the Southern Pacific RR. The Southern Pacific kept the Central Pacific alive as a corporate entity until 1959, operating it as a subsidiary. In 1959 the two formally merged, and continued as the Southern Pacific. The Southern Pacific was bought by the Union Pacific in 1996. Today the Union Pacific is the oldest and largest rail system operating in the US. Its tracks are all west of the Mississippi River.
On may 10th 1869 the construction of the transcontinental railroad linking the Union Pacific and the Central Pacific railroads met at that spot. Leland Stanford, president of the Central Pacific railroad drove the last spike, a golden one with a silver hammer. The Western Union telegraph system was connected at the same time. The locomotives, ( #119 and Jupiter ) touched noses and the telegram " done " was sent to an ovation from the crowd that had gathered.
The people involved in the Pacific Railroad Act was President Abraham Lincoln, Congress, the Union Pacific Railroad, and the Central Pacific Railroad. The Act granted the rail companies land on each side of the railroad they built, which they later sold to settlers.

Union Pacific Railroad built the line westward and the Central Pacific Railroad built the line eastward. The first transcontinental railroad basically connected the east and the west of the United States. Central Pacific Railroad merged with Southern Pacific in 1885 and then Union Pacific bought Southern Pacific in 1996. Union Pacific still operates much of the rail from Central Pacific Railroad and Southern Pacific Railroad.
