Puerto Rico was one of the earliest islands of the West Indies to be colonized by Spain, and was ruled by the Spanish for nearly 400 years.

The first settlement was at Caparra (now Guaynabo), established in 1508 by the first governor, Juan Ponce de Leon. Spain ceded Puerto Rico to the US after the Spanish-American War (1898) and it has been a US commonwealth since then.
