This is very rare, except maybe for older men in the south-western tip of France where the beret was popular. In other regions you are more likely to see people wearing caps, but they are falling out of use too (the Baseball caps are popular with the younger genration, though). One would maybe wear a beret when going to a football or Rugby game to support the national team.
Berets and other sort of caps (except the "baseball" variety) are only worn by elder men. They were in use in the military, but nowadays, the only chance of the beret is a rebirth as a feminine fashion accessory.
It leaves your hands free for other activity.
french people were berets because it is a custom thing to do

About 46,000,000 berets are sold each day in France!
a beret is a cap/hat and a baguette is a bread. I don't think people wear breads on their heads and berets have been a popular type of hat for decades.answer 2:I have a question: How many Americans wear a cowboy hat and hamburger every day? Seriously, I have a beret, but I rarely wear it even if I think it's cute. They were popular in past generations and old men may wear them still. Sometimes on a Sunday morning I will go to the boulangerie to buy croissants and baguettes; I wear my sneakers but I don't put my baguette on my head, non non non! Even if I have had tooto much wine.. No, please don't do it... Ohlala!
Although B Movies would have you think the French men wear Apache dance outfits (berets, striped shirts and black pants), trench coats if they are detectives, and waiters outfits (black pants with white aprons) and the French women dress in the latest Euro fashions, they actually dress very much like any other European or North American people. The brand names might differ and local fashions might be evident, but overall they are the same.

berets
France does not really have a traditional dress code now. They wear basically the same as Westerners. However France does seem to come out with all of the latest fashions first.
Originally, the French, but now manufactures worldwide.
they are not berets they are actually called lid golf hats for men here, in paris, they wear them because they are stylish, you know paris, all about the style The beret is traditionally an item of male headgear. It was originally worn by Basque fishermen. It was later adopted by many military units (particularly paratroops). By World War 2 it was the most common headgear worn by French peasants so was adopted by the French resistance members both male and female.
No. The 101st Airborne is no longer an airborne division. It's has been the 101st Airborne (Air Assault) Division since Vietnam (I think). They wear the black berets. I was in 1st Brigade. -Keith
Some French people may wear berets, (French spelling: béret) but not that much. They are still something common for men of a certain age in south-western France, just like other sorts of caps. Let's say 1% of Frenchmen could wear old-style caps, and maybe the beret type would be one tenth of these caps. And they can also be a fashionable accessory for women. What is sure is that even the French press use the cliché of a beret-wearing man when they want to symbolyse the traditional Frenchman.
They might ear berets on their heads and they would wear a grey school coat.
