Fuels are any mixture of a flammable substance and oxygen, as nothing can undergo combustion without the presence of oxygen. Depending on the air-fuel mixture, the fuel may burn poorly or not at all. The actual density of the fuel and the molecular construction of the fuel are factors wich play a role within the combustion process. Crude oil proves to be a poor fuel source compared to the refined gasoline it can produces, with the crude burning slowly and poorly, and the gasoline burning rapidly. Unprocessed crude oil is much denser than gasoline.

This may not hold true for other fuel sources however, such as coal and wood.
