Tuatara is the word for both singular and plural.

Tuatara lay eggs, as is befitting a member of the reptile family. Henry, a male about 111 years old living at the Southland Museum, became a father for the first time in 2009. Hooray Henry!!

Sphenodontia are the genera. the 'dontia' bit referring to a small tooth with which they break out of the egg. Tuatara is the Maori name, tara = peak, tua = back.

They separated from the rest of the reptiles about 200 million years ago, and though referred to as a 'living fossil', that is not strictly correct, as they have continued to evolve.

Living underground, as they do a lot of the time, they were able to survive the trauma of the K/T extinctions.

They move s l o w l y and a friend of mine was admiring a model of one in the British Museum, he considered it very life-like. After about 10 minutes of studying it, he was surprised when it blinked!!
