No. We can live lives of quiet desperation and hopelessness. We can trust in ourselves exclusively, even though we know how deficient we can be. We can rely on our own resources, even though they may be limited. We can forsake fellowship and communion. We can live totally egocentric, hedonistic lifestyles, with little or no regard for others. We can be unremitting and unforgiving, keeping in all the hurts and griefs we receive. We can carry around guilt with no place to lay it off. We can come to the end of life alone and bitter, facing death with ambivalence, fear or even terror. And when we die, we can spend eternity destitute of, and yearning for, the glory and wonder of God's presence. No, we don't really need Jesus Christ in our lives.
We can become Buddhists and live lives of calm and serenity. We can trust in the teachings of Buddha, not Jesus. We can rely on the universal resources of Buddhism and enjoy fellowship and communion. We can live totally committed lives, even going about begging for alms as part of our spiritual development. We can be gracious, tolerant and accepting. When we come to the end of our lives we will know that we have done all we can to deserve a better life to follow. There is more than one way to nirvana and it is our choice. No one should make us feel guilty for our decisions.
