You need to use a CPR mask with a one way valve to protect yourself.
Yes, respiration is only given artificially by CPR. Respirations can be given via a mask, bag-valve mask, or mouth-to-mouth (not recommended).
Breathing is required for CPR. You can use a breathing barrier such as a mask; or use a bag valve mask for the breaths. Mouth to mouth, per se, is not recommended.
The bag-mask device is not recommended for a single rescuer to provide breaths during CPR.
Use a bag valve mask (BVM) to minimize possible bloodborne exposure. Using the BVM will allow the use of a mask on the face to minimize airborne exposure.
There are numerous barriers; some more effective and safe than others. Short answer is 3 types; a mask, a non-rebreather mask, and a BVM. The older microshield and other types without a 1-way valve should no longer be used. At least, you want a CPR mask that has a 1-way valve. The next better would be the CPR mask with the O2 connection (and1-way valve). As you get more into the clinical setting, a non-rebreather and BVM would be the other types.
Use a CPR mask which comes with a disposable 1-way valve to discard after each use.
Use pocket mask during breathing to protect yourself from patient secretions and fluids. You do not always need to use the pocket mask though, hands only CPR is to get the heart beating again.
Yes you can perform CPR on a person with an artificial heart valve. There is no difference on the CPR procedure with an artificial valve.
Yes
A CPR mask is a mask that has a one-way valve on it so that it can be placed over the unconscious person's mouth. The valve only allows air to go into the unconscious person, to put air into their lungs while preventing air and or fluids (saliva, blood, etc.) from getting on you or in your mouth. If you accidentally put it on the person backwards, do NOT turn it around and and put the contaminated side on your mouth. Universal Precautionsassume that everyone has a contagious disease until proven otherwise. (wear gloves, too)In addition, the mask should be easy to assemble and use; be made of pliable transparent material suitable for use in hot and cold conditions; have a standard valve size; and have an inlet for oxygen.
A face mask, also referred to as a face shield, is used during CPR rescue breaths to prevent vomit from the victim from entering the mouth of the rescuer. This is done through the use of a one-way valve, allowing air to flow one way but not the other.
