Wolves avoid contact with human beings at all cost, would probably only attack a human being if they were either rabid, or cornered and provoked, and would probably only eat a human being if, for some reason, they ran across a fresh human corpse. To my knowledge, there is not a single documented case of a wolf attacking and eating a human being, if the wolf was not rabid or starving. Folklore? Sure, lots of them.
Attacks by wolves on humans are rare but they do happen. For a list of attacks in North America click on this link.
